Bind fails but no log file that show anything

Your named server suddenly stops working. You go into a mild panic because restarting the service doesn’t show you where it’s failing. It’s as if bind just doesn’t log.

Luckily you have Webmin installed. You go to Webmin, Servers, BIND, and then you do:

Check bind config

This reveals the problem:

The following errors were found in the BIND configuration file /etc/named.conf or referenced zone files ..
dns_master_load: /var/named/domain.com.hosts:57: imap.domain.com: multiple RRs of singleton type
dns_master_load: /var/named/domain.com.hosts:58: smtp.domain.com: multiple RRs of singleton type
dns_master_load: /var/named/domain.com.hosts:59: pop3.domain.com: multiple RRs of singleton type
zone domain.com.host/IN: loading from master file /var/named/domain.com.hosts failed: multiple RRs of singleton type
zone domain.com.host/IN: not loaded due to errors.
_default/domain.com/IN: multiple RRs of singleton type

You remember you update the Virtualmin Server Settings Master Template for BIND to include *imap.${DOM}”

  1. Remove those settings.
  2. Delete those errand DNS records
  3. Restart Bind
