How to add database access to MySQL from a remote host using Virtualmin

This article explains how to add remote access to a Virtualmin host so that the end-user can access their MySQL database.

  1. Go to Virtualmin
  2. Choose the correct host from the dropdown menu
  3. Click on Edit Database
  4. Click on the Remote Hosts tab
  5. Enter the hostname or IP address separated by a a new line

The default entry is localhost

To add an IP address, the screen should now read

Localhost
196.25.1.1

Please note for this procedure to work port 3306 need to be open on the firewall. On most servers it’s already open unless you are running a paranoid firewall system. The symptoms for a paranoid firewall will be a timeout instead of an access denied message.
